Church Custodian

Job Summary:

The Church Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the church and its facilities. This role includes cleaning, minor maintenance, and setting up for church services and events.

Key Responsibilities:

Cleaning & Maintenance:

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize all areas of the church, including sanctuary, offices, classrooms, restrooms, and fellowship halls.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins regularly.
  • Restock restrooms with necessary supplies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of windows, doors, and entryways.
  • Ensure sidewalks, parking lots, and exterior areas are clean and free of debris.

Facility & Event Support:

  • Set up and take down chairs, tables, and equipment for worship services, meetings, and special events.
  • Ensure HVAC systems, lighting, and other utilities function properly. (Report if issues discovered)
  • Lock and unlock doors for scheduled events, ensuring security procedures are followed.

Repairs & Safety:

  • Perform minor repairs (e.g., changing light bulbs, fixing minor leaks, basic carpentry).
  • Notify church leadership of larger maintenance issues.
  • Monitor supplies and request restocking as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming church environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as needed.

Work Schedule & Compensation:

Hours per week: 20 hours per week, hours can be flexible in accordance with employer and employee’s agreement.

Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour

Employment Terms:

This position is initially probationary for a period of three (3) months. Performance and fit for the role will be evaluated at the end of this period, at which point continued employment will be determined.

End of Employment

You may resign from your employment by giving us no less than two (2) weeks’ written notice. If we do not require you to report to work during that time, you will continue to be paid for the two (2) weeks. Your employment may be terminated without cause by providing you the required notice or pay in lieu of notice as outlined in the ESA and such pay shall be your full entitlement pursuant to the ESA and at common law. We may terminate your employment for just cause at any time without notice, pay in lieu of notice, severance pay, or other liability. For the purposes of this agreement, just cause includes, but is not limited to:

  • a material breach of the terms of this letter or our employment policies; unacceptable performance standards.
  • theft, dishonesty or falsifying records, including providing false information as part of your application for employment.
  • intentional destruction, improper use or abuse of company property.
  • violence in the workplace.
  • obscene conduct at our premises property or during company-related functions at other locations.
  • harassment of your co-workers, supervisors, managers, congregants, colleagues, or other individuals associated with Crossroads Bible Church.
  • insubordination or willful refusal to take directions.
  • intoxication or impairment in the workplace.
  • repeated, unwarranted lateness, absenteeism or failure to report for work; and
  • personal conduct that prejudices Crossroads Bible Church’s reputation, services or morale.

Your employment may be terminated on the basis of frustration and considered at an end if you become incapable of performing the essential duties and responsibilities as required on account of a disability, notwithstanding reasonable efforts to accommodate up to the point of undue hardship and upon receipt of medical information that there is no reasonable likelihood of a return to work, the incapacity continues for more than ten (10) consecutive days, and there is no reasonable prospect you will be able to return to work to perform the essential duties and responsibilities required by your employment. Although we hope that it will not be necessary, we reserve the right to temporarily lay you off from your employment, in accordance with the ESA. A temporary layoff will not be considered a termination of your employment unless it is deemed to be one under the ESA.

We reserve the right to make changes to your employment, including changes to your duties and compensation, upon giving you notice in accordance with notice requirements laid out above. If your employment ends for any reason, you will be required to return all property of Crossroads Bible Church, including confidential and proprietary information, and delete all electronic copies of it from your personal electronic devices, and from any cloud-based storage accounts and social media.

In the course of your employment, you may receive confidential information about Crossroads Bible Church and its staff and Congregants. You agree to not use any confidential information except insofar as required by your employment obligations to CBC. Further, you agree to not disclose such confidential information.
